Louisville, Kentucky: Five killed in a bank shooting
Five people have been killed and nine others injured in a shooting at a bank in Louisville, Kentucky. The attacker, an employee of the bank, used an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle and live-streamed the attack on Instagram. The victims, aged between 40 and 64, include a rookie police officer who is still in critical condition after brain surgery. The gunman was fatally shot by police officers who arrived at the scene within three minutes of the attack. The shooting is one of at least 146 mass shootings that have occurred in the US so far in 2023, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive.
The attacker had recently been informed by the bank that he was going to be fired and had written a note detailing his plans for the mass shooting before going to work on Monday. He had no previous contact with law enforcement. The shooting has prompted renewed calls for gun control measures from US President Joe Biden, who demanded that Congress take action. Kentucky is one of 26 states in the US that allow most adults over 21 years old to purchase and carry a firearm without a license.
The victims of the shooting have all been identified, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear paid tribute to a senior vice president at the bank, Tommy Elliot, who he described as an “incredible friend”. The mayor of Louisville, Craig Greenberg, called the attack “an evil act of targeted violence” and noted that he himself had been a victim of a gun attack last year. The shooting has once again raised concerns about gun violence in the US and the need for stricter gun control measures.
