James Nathaniel Brown (February 17, 1936 – May 18, 2023) was an American football player, civil rights activist, and actor. He played as a fullback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) from 1957 through 1965. Considered to be one of the greatest running backs of all time, as well as one of the greatest players in NFL history, Brown was a Pro Bowl invitee every season he was in the league, was recognized as the AP NFL Most Valuable Player three times, and won an NFL championship with the Browns in 1964.

Early Life
Brown was born in St. Simons Island, Georgia, on February 17, 1936. He was the son of James Nathaniel Brown Sr., a sharecropper, and Theresa Brown, a homemaker. Brown had five siblings.
Brown was a standout athlete in high school, excelling in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was offered scholarships to play football at several major universities, including Syracuse University, Michigan State University, and the University of Southern California. Brown ultimately chose to attend Syracuse University.
College Career
At Syracuse University, Brown was a three-time All-American football player. He led the nation in rushing in 1956 and 1957. In 1957, he was also named the Heisman Trophy winner, becoming the first African American to receive the award.
NFL Career
Brown was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the sixth overall pick in the 1957 NFL Draft. He quickly became one of the most dominant players in the league. In his rookie season, he rushed for 947 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was named to the Pro Bowl and was selected as the NFL’s Rookie of the Year.
Brown went on to have a Hall of Fame career with the Browns. He retired after nine seasons, having rushed for 12,312 yards and 106 touchdowns. He also caught 243 passes for 2,499 yards and 14 touchdowns. Brown was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player three times. He also led the NFL in rushing eight times.
Civil Rights Activism
Brown was also a prominent civil rights activist during his playing career. He was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was outspoken about the need for racial equality. In 1966, he boycotted the Pro Bowl in protest of the Vietnam War.

After retiring from football, Brown pursued a career in acting. He appeared in over 40 films and television shows, including “The Dirty Dozen,” “100 Rifles,” and “Slaughter.” He was also a successful businessman, owning several businesses, including a restaurant and a record label.
