Release Date

Disney has announced that Avatar 3 is scheduled to release on December 20, 2024. This comes two years after the release of Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters. The release schedule also includes Avatar 4 in December 2026 and Avatar 5 in December 2028, with the assumption that no changes will occur.

Filming Progress

The majority of Avatar 3 was already shot in conjunction with Avatar: The Way of Water. However, there are still some pending scenes to be completed. According to Zoe Saldaña, who plays Neytiri, the team is approximate “70%” done with the movie and plans to wrap up filming in the summer of 2024.

Additional Filming

While there won’t be entirely new scenes, there will be some pickups and revisiting of specific moments. Sigourney Weaver, who portrays Kiri, confirmed that she will return to production in January for these pickups.

Plot

James Cameron, the director, has teased that Avatar 3 will introduce a new group of Na’vi known as the “Ash People” and will delve into the fire element. He also mentioned that this installment will explore a different narrative dynamic compared to the previous two movies. While Avatar and Avatar 2 showcased positive examples of the Na’vi and negative examples of humans, Avatar 3 will flip the narrative, offering more nefarious Na’vi characters and a brighter side of humanity.

Antagonist

Cameron revealed that Avatar 3 will feature a new villain from Pandora. The antagonist will likely pose a more personal threat, in contrast to the faceless military machine depicted in the first two films.

Official Title

Despite initial reports suggesting titles like “Avatar: The Seed Bearer,” “Avatar: The Tulkun Rider,” and “Avatar: The Quest for Eywa,” there hasn’t been an official announcement regarding the title of Avatar 3. James Cameron and the production team have stated that the leaked titles were under consideration but cautioned that no final decisions have been made. The search for the official title continues.
